About Raymond J. Pontier

Raymond J. Pontier was a minister and writer whose sermons and talks in this collection span the second half of the twentieth century and beyond (1950–2002). He served “48 years” in active ministry, including decades in the Reformed Church in America and later years in Unitarian Universalism.

Pontier was born in Clifton, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers University with a B.A. in history and from New Brunswick Theological Seminary with a master’s degree in divinity. Ordained in the Reformed Church in America, he served congregations in Berne, Kingston, and Port Jervis, New York, and in Clifton, New Jersey.

In the 1970s he accepted a call to the Lakeland Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Wayne, New Jersey, and later received ministerial fellowship with the Unitarian Universalist Association. His sermons frequently emphasize conscience, reasoned faith, and public responsibility—especially in the areas of civil rights, fair housing, and peace.

Pontier often acknowledged the people who formed him, and he wrote with affection about his family. He and his wife, Barbara Van Buskirk Pontier, were married for 58 years, and he speaks with gratitude for their children and grandchildren.

  • Tradition: Reformed Church in America (early ministry), then Unitarian Universalism (later ministry).
  • Congregations mentioned in his sermons: Berne (NY), Kingston (NY), Port Jervis (NY), Clifton (NJ), and Lakeland UU (Wayne, NJ).
  • Recurring themes: liberal religion, conscience and integrity, community life, and a persistent call toward justice and peace.
